Living here in the Midwest, we know winter is more than just a season—it’s an endurance sport. Whether you’re in Sioux City, Council Bluffs, or anywhere across Iowa, Nebraska, or South Dakota, the cold brings specific risks to your home that can turn expensive quickly.

As your local Allstate agency, we want to help you protect your biggest investment before the snow really starts to fly. Here are the most common winter hazards we see in our area and actionable steps to prevent them.

1. Frozen Pipes: The Silent Mess

When the temperature drops below freezing, the water in your pipes can freeze and expand, leading to bursts that cause significant water damage.

  • Prevention Tip: Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F, even if you are away. Disconnect all outdoor garden hoses and insulate pipes in unheated areas like basements or crawl spaces. On extremely cold nights, open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate around the plumbing.

2. Ice Dams: The Roof Wrecker

An ice dam forms when heat escapes from your attic, melts snow on your roof, and the water refreezes at the eaves. This dam prevents proper drainage, forcing water to back up under your shingles and leak into your home.

  • Prevention Tip: Keep your gutters clean of leaves and debris so melting snow has a place to go. Ensure your attic is well-insulated and ventilated to keep the roof surface cold. If you notice large icicles forming, it’s a sign your attic might be too warm.

3. Heating System Failure & Carbon Monoxide

Your furnace works overtime in our winters. A breakdown isn’t just uncomfortable; it can lead to frozen pipes. Worse, a malfunctioning system can leak carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, deadly gas.

  • Prevention Tip: Change your furnace filter regularly to keep the system running efficiently. Schedule an annual tune-up with a professional HVAC technician. Most importantly, test your CO detectors and smoke alarms monthly.

4. Fireplace & Chimney Risks

There’s nothing better than a cozy fire during a blizzard, but creosote buildup (a byproduct of burning wood) is highly flammable and a leading cause of chimney fires.

  • Prevention Tip: Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a certified sweep once a year before you light the first fire. Always use a screen to catch sparks and never leave a fire unattended.

5. Heavy Snow Loads

Heavy, wet snow can put immense stress on your roof. While most local homes are built to withstand our climate, older roofs or excessive accumulation can lead to structural damage.

  • Prevention Tip: Watch for warning signs like sagging ceilings, cracking noises, or interior doors that suddenly stick. If you are concerned about the amount of snow on your roof, hire a professional to clear it—it’s safer than climbing a ladder on ice yourself.
